The exhibition “50 Years of Chair Design” at the “Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe” (MKG) Hamburg: a complete look at the evolution of the chair through five decades that have seen some of the most important moments in the history of design.
Since the introduction of new methods and materials of construction during the ’60s, when the chair was re-invented itself to become not only an object of use linked to its function, but also became a kind of sculpture, an icon. The exhibition comes to the present day and includes over a hundred chairs, stools and chaise longue, which come from the museum’s collection with works by many designers.
In addition the choice of Ron Arad, Frank Gehry, Tom Dixon and Dieter Rams to tell how the chair has been often been the ‘business card’ of many designers: an object capable of representing the style, the creative process.
